Top Twelve Must-Have (free) Android Apps
Every time after flashing my phone, there are some apps I have to install in order to be happy with it. This is the top ten eleven twelve list:
Automatically backup SMS, MMS and call log entries using a separate label in Gmail / Google Calendar. It is also possible to restore SMS and call log entries back to the phone
Yes! It’s free and it works flawless. It takes time if you have a lot of messages/call log entries (to restore, to back up for the first time, etc) or if you have a slow internet connection, but it’s worth waiting.
Get WhatsApp Messenger and say goodbye to SMS! (well… not quite… keep on reading)
Well, they say it’s free. But only for the first year. And it only works if the person you’re chatting with has it as well. I include it here though, as I love the “Group Chat” feature.
Twitter and Facebook for Android
These two are self-explaining.
FBReader and ColorDict Dictionary Wikipedia
FBReader (FBReaderJ) is an e-book reader. Supports epub, oeb and fb2(.zip) file formats. FBReader is fast, highly customizable. Can use external TrueType/OpenType fonts. Includes hyphenation patterns for 16 languages.
I always list these two together as ColorDict is a very helpful application when you run into unknown words in the books you are reading. Integrates very well with FBReader.
Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere. After you install Dropbox on your computer, any file you save to your Dropbox will automatically save to all your computers, your Android device, and even the Dropbox website! With the Dropbox app, you can take everything that matters to you on the go.
Whatever file you put in your “Dropbox” folder on your PC (or other mobile devices) is available everywhere. As simple as copy/paste. No more “I don’t know where my data cable is”. Works over any type of data connection.
Foursquare helps you explore the world around you. Keep up with friends, get insider tips, and unlock discounts and rewards.
Well, all right, it’s not a “must have” app. But I love it!
ClockSync synchronizes device system clock with atomic time from Internet via NTP (Network Time Protocol).
It’s the first app in the list which I recommend for ROOTED phones. If your Android device misses a second or two per day (mine does), this is the app for you. Just disable automatic time sync from settings and enable it in this app.
MX Video Player - The best way to enjoy your movies.
While it’s not the best video player for ALL formats, it has most of them covered. And can load subtitles. And has nice swipe gestures for playback control, brightness control and volume control.
ASTRO File Manager helps organize your pictures, music, videos and other files.
Some people prefer other file managers. Well, Astro is the only one which proved for me stable on the long run.
Follow all your favorite sites, blogs, and more, all in one place. See what your friends are sharing, and easily share any interesting articles you read. The Google Reader app syncs with the web version, so all your reading lists are always up to date.
If you love RSS, you’ll love Google Reader!
